I have always been fascinated by birdsong, and it forms the basis of three recent pieces: given - taken, Wigg Island Birds and now Common British Birds.

Common British Birds are a series of pieces, for different instruments, some analogue, some digital, where the material is derived from recordings of birdsong. The pitch, rhythmic and intensity data of the song is extracted using PureData, and then it is either left unaltered (as in Oystercatcher) or worked on in different ways (as in Reed Warbler).
These two pieces are parts of a set of pieces for solo piano, the first completed cycle of 'Common British Birds'.
